A recent study conducted by bed and mattress retailers British Beds Direct has revealed both Newcastle and Sunderland to be among the most sleep-deprived cities in the UK.

The study was conducted by looking at search engine trends for phrases and searches such as ‘why can’t I sleep?’ and ‘how to get a better nights sleep.’

York took the top spot of the study with Newcastle placing second in terms of search traffic per capita. Tyneside was not the only North East region struggling to get their eight hours per night with Sunderland being ranked sixth.

The study also looked at the most common reasons for lack of sleep in the UK with financial worries linked to the ongoing cost of living crisis ranking top. Children and health issues were also found to be huge factors in how much sleep the UK is missing out on.
