£5.3million restoration work at Whitley Bay Metro station resumes with new contractor

Nexus has confirmed that a £5.3million restoration project on the historic canopy at Whitley Bay Metro station has restarted after a new contractor was appointed.

The restoration work will see the glazing replaced and steel work refurbished on the Grade II listed structure, which dates back to the Edwardian era.

Metro operator Nexus has revealed that Kier, an infrastructure services and property group, is now carrying out the work, with the station set to remain open to customers throughout the duration.

Sarah McManus, head of renewals at Nexus, has explained that the necessary work will ensure the future of the iconic station.

She said: “We’re delighted to say that our exciting restoration project at Whitley Bay Metro station is back underway.

“We’ve appointed a new construction contractor, Kier, who are a leading firm in the industry, and they have taken over all of the detailed work on the station’s historic canopy.

“Whitley Bay is a station with a great deal of charm. The station has proudly served Metro since the network opened.

“This project will ensure that the station is there for locals and visitors to enjoy for many decades to come.”

The work will see the glass in the canopy replaced with more robust modern alternatives, along with strengthening and repainting of the steelwork.

The glazing directly above the Metro tracks will be reinstated to provide a more sheltered environment for customers.
