A nationwide trend this year has seen results drop with around 60,000 fewer A and A* awarded in 2022.

The number of A and A*s fell to 36.4% from a record 44.8% in 2021 - although the number is still higher than the 25.5% in 2019.

Education Secretary James Cleverley acknowledged that students have had a "really tough time" over recent times and congratulated them on their results.

At Queen Alexandra Sixth Form in Wallsend, today marks the day students will shift their gaze towards their confirmed future destinations with some preparing to fly the nest.
