Celebrating its 40th anniversary, The Great North Run is set to start at 9:15 on Sunday September 12, with staggered start times for the thousands of people taking part.

Rather than end South Shields the route will take runners through the city, starting on the A167 motorway and ending on Great North Road.

Runners will cross the Tyne Bridge twice on this route, looping around and returning to the city centre.

The Great North Run will not end in South Shields for the very first time due to Covid-19 restrictions and the impact on public transport.

Closures will affect several key roads within Newcastle upon Tyne; however, most roads are set to re-open on the later on September 12 when the race is finished.

Road Closures

The Great North Run route will take runners from the A167 motorway to Great North Road in the city centre.
