Sage Gateshead has shared its new name after it was revealed the new Quayside arena and conference centre would also be called ‘The Sage’ after its sponsor.

Now The Glasshouse International Centre for Music, the venue wanted to avoid confusion and launched a campaign to find a new name by asking audiences about what the venue means to them. In the end, ‘Glasshouse’ was chosen from more than 100 ideas.

Despite the change, the venue has said its commitment to live music remains at the heart of the charity.

Abigail Pogson, Managing Director of The Glasshouse said: “Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences of live music with us to help shape this new identity. Today marks a new era, building on all that has happened over the charity’s near 20 years so far.

“We’re looking forward to continuing to see people across the North East enjoy and make great music, working both with musicians from across the globe and from our most musical region.”

According to the BBC, names suggested by the public also included the Slug, the Bug, the Armadillo, the Onion and the Space Potato. Alas, they did not make the cut.

Construction on the new Sage next door has begun, however the completion date has been pushed back a couple of times now. It is thought the doors to the Quayside arena will open in 2025.
