Sam Fender admits he came close to ‘haemorrhaging my vocal cords’ before Sziget cancellation

Sam Fender said he was nearly ‘out of the game for months’ and had no choice but to cancel the show

Sam Fender admitted he was just one show away from haemorrhaging his vocal cords before pulling out of Sziget festival earlier this week.

The North Shields star had to cancel his performance at the Budapest festival at the last minute under doctor's orders.

It left many fans, some of whom travelled to the 95,000-strong festival especially to catch Fender's set, sharing disappointment online.

On the day of his performance, a message on the Sziget Festival Official Facebook page read: "We are very sad to announce that unfortunately due to Laryngitis, Sam Fender won't be able to perform today at Sziget Festival. We wish you a speedy recovery!"

On Thursday, as the 'Seventeen Going Under' singer shared some snaps of his recent travels across the USA, one fan asked the star what happened with the cancellation.

Fender jumped in the comments section to reply and explain how serious his health situation was.

He said: "Hey, was absolutely gutted, my ENT doc had a look at my voice and basically said I'd likely haemorrhage my cords if I'd went on to play that night, if that happened I'd be out of the game for months, we had to pull out.

"So gutted as we've been so excited to play that festival for ages and we didn't want to let anybody down, so sorry for disappointing you guys, hopefully we'll be back in Budapest soon."

It prompted a mixed response from followers on Instagram, with some sharing their well-wishes but others failing to comprehend the severity of Laryngitis.

Some wrote messages such as "my mate had his toon shirt on so you were there in spirit" and "I really hope you're feeling better now, it's sad but you made the right choice".

Meanwhile, others said "would have been nice to hear this from you on the day" and "I came from Italy to see you, as you didn't schedule any dates in Italy, and you stood us up like this".
