The new academic year will bring challanges, friendships and plenty of stories for those starting university for the first time, as well as those returning for second and third years as well as postgraduate courses.
First of all, we want to wish everyone starting their journey in Newcastle a massive congratulations - you’re now in one of the best cities in the country, not only for the student experience, but in general!
Personally, I moved to the North East back in 2016 from Kent, and eight years later I still call the region my home, and I’m very proud to do so.
As a welcome present, to anyone still settling into their new surroundings, these are some of the dos and don’ts of living as a student in the North East - from someone who has made the trip themselves.

9. Don't come with the assumption 'it's grim up north'
Yes, it can be colder than southern areas, but that isn't a reason to stay away. The North East is stunning throughout the year - and you'll quickly get used to not taking jackets on nights out! | The_Chickenwing Photo: The_Chickenwing

10. Take a trip to Ouseburn
Now seen as a student hotbed, Ouseburn is one of the trendiest parts of the city. Full of bars, independent shops, music venues, an inner city farm and far more, you'll end up out here a few times over the course of your degree - make the most of the amazing area! | Submitted Photo: Submitted

11. Have an amazing time!
