As much as we have seen some musicians from the North East make it big, headlining huge festivals and recording number one albums and singles, but every artist starts somewhere.
From St James Park right through to pub back rooms, there are some amazing places to watch live music and catch your favourite band across Tyneside, and these are some of the best in our opinion.
1. O2 City Hall Newcastle
The second largest full time venue behind the Utilita Arena, City Hall has already seen some big names perform at the Norhtumberland Road venue this year including Elbow, Johnny Marr, The Hives and many more. The only downside is how crowded the donstairs bar can get on a busy night. Here, Johnny Marr performs at the venue on the first night of his 2024 UK tour. | Jason Button
2. Boiler Shop
Situated behind the Royal Mail delivery office on Forth Street sits Boiler Shop, a 1,000 capacity space which is one of the best sites in the city. The former train works building hosted its first gig in May 2017 and still retains many of the original features. Artists set to perform at the space for the rest of 2024 include Fontaines DC, Explosions In The Sky and Embrace. The venue is also well known as Newcastle's home to Bongos Bingo. | Jason Button
3. The Cluny
The Cluny in the heart of Ouseburn is one of the city's best loved venues. Well known as the place one of the earliest Arctic Monkeys live recordings took place (the full set is available on Youtube), the site has a main room which has hosted every genre you can think of as well as a smaller underground venue. Complete with a platform and intimate feel, the venue still attracts some of the most exciting acts in the country. | Jason Button
4. The Tyne Bar
Taking a short walk from the Cluny towards the Tyne, you will find the hugely popular Tyne Bar. The pub regularly hosts live bands on weekends and there is no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon in the summer than with a couple of drinks watching some live music. | Google
