Here we reveal which hospitals in Newcastle and Tyne and Wear are currently the worst hit by coronavirus.

According to official data from the UK Government there are still thousands of coronavirus patients in hospitals across England, with hundreds receiving care in Newcastle too.

Here we reveal which hospitals in Newcastle and Tyne and Wear are currently the worst affected by coronavirus.

Hundreds on mechanical ventilation beds

More than 5,400 people are currently in hospital with coronavirus across England and 825 are on mechanical ventilation beds.

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is currently the worst hit out of all NHS trusts in England. There are currently 183 people in hospital there with coronavirus and 33 on mechanical ventilation beds.

This is followed by Barts Health NHS Trust in London which has 144 patients and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust which has 141 patients.

Across the country 115 Trusts have at least one patient on a mechanical ventilation bed.

Barts Health NHS Trust also has the greatest number of patients on mechanical ventilation beds with 38 in total at the latest count.

Not all hospitals are as affected at this point in the pandemic  – 30 Trusts, or 15%, currently have no coronavirus patients.

The situation in Newcastle

Hospitals in Newcastle and Tyne and Wear are still treating hundreds of coronavirus patients.

There are currently 206 patients in hospital with the virus and 33 patients on mechanical ventilation beds.

The number of patients in each hospital in and around Tyne and Wear are:

  1. South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust currently has 73 people in hospital with six patients on mechanical ventilation beds.
  2. Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust currently has 50 people in hospital with 11 patients on mechanical ventilation beds.
  3. Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust currently has 43 people in hospital with 10 patients on mechanical ventilation beds.
  4. Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust currently has 30 people in hospital with six patients on mechanical ventilation beds.
  5. Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust currently has 10 people in hospital.
