Major improvements to transport services into the city centre are needed to help with an extra 9,000 workers travelling to work, according to Counsellor Greg Stone.

HMRC announced they were moving thousands of staff from its Longbenton and Washington offices to a huge new block on East Pilgrim Street - but leaders are warning that better transport links need to be in place to cope.

Meanwhile, drivers are being encouraged to register for financial support if they think they will be affected by the new Clean Air Zone.

The clean air zone will be introduced in July next year across most of Newcastle city centre and it could mean a charge of £12.50 per day if a non-compliant vehicle drives through.

And finally, Newcastle’s cafes and bars could get a share of £250,000 to keep outdoor seating areas warm during the winter in a bid to cut the risk of new Covid 19 infections.

City council bosses are set to hand over the funding to help 150 businesses.
