Local Council leaders have been left “incredibly disappointed” as the North East was excluded from a £7bn boost for transport outside of London. The government said if all of Tyne and Wear and the wider region elect a mayor then this would see £500 million invested in public transport.

Tyne and Wear Metro passengers have been urged to wear a face mask as Covid-19 cases escalate. Operator Nexus announced in July masks were compulsory for passengers, but the rule hasn’t been enforced. There are calls for the government to shift to ‘Plan B’ and reimpose some coronavirus safety measures.
