Met office issue thunderstorm weather warning for Newcastle

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for thunderstorms in Newcastle for Saturday August 21.

Forecasters are warning there could be heavier showers and thunderstorms across much of the UK including the North East by late Saturday morning.

The thunderstorms are set to follow rain overnight and during the morning.

These showers are set to become more widespread into Saturday afternoon, with torrential downpours possible in a few places, bringing around 20mm of rain in less than an hour and 30-40mm in a couple of hours.

Weather forecasters are even warning there could be hail storms in some locations.

The Yellow weather warning is in place from Midday until 10pm on Saturday, August 21.

The Met Office warns: “Many places missing the worst, but heavy showers and thunderstorms may cause some transport disruption and perhaps flooding.”

Saturday:

Heavy rain is forecast overnight from Friday into late Saturday morning. Rain showers are expected to ease off to be lighter over lunchtime before heavy showers return from 3pm.

Light winds are expected with a maximum temperature of 19 °C.

Sunday:

Rather cloudy with some rain likely at first on Sunday before brightening up, though with a risk of thundery showers developing.

Maximum temperature of 18°C is expected.
