Newcastle is currently under a yellow weather warning for snow and ice. The northeast, and Newcastle in particular, has been one of the worst hit areas in the country for weather warnings.

This comes as it was revealed by the Met Office that the UK had its driest February for 30 years and the fifth mildest February on record. This led to people believing that the cold weather was behind us for 2023.

But, as March arrived, so did the cold weather. Temperatures around the UK began to plummet which led to weather warnings, primarily for snow and ice being handed out to various parts of the UK.

As well as weather warnings, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued a level three cold weather alert for all regions in England. The alert is in place between 1am on Monday, March 6 to midnight on Thursday March 9.

Initially, the UKHSA said: “The North East of England, North West of England and Yorkshire are now under a level 3 alert, while the West Midlands, East Midlands, East of England, the South East and the South West regions remain at level 2. The current alert is in place between 1am on Monday, March 6 and midnight on Thursday, March 9.”

Some parts in the northeast, including South Tyneside and Sunderland do not have a current weather warning. However, Newcastle has a yellow weather warning for snow that expires Friday.
