The slightly milder temperatures of the New Year have been swiftly replaced by icy conditions, with the Met Office issuing an ice warning which has been in place this morning across the region.

The warning came into place at 2am this morning as temperatures hit a low of  -3°C at 5am.

Looking ahead throughout the day, we see a high of just 2°C by the afternoon but in places it could feel as cold as -5°C.

The clear skies with no clouds around will result in a bitterly cold end to today (Tuesday) and even colder night.

Wednesday morning looks set to be more of the same, and winds of around 18mph could add to any cold temperature making for a tough commute to work and school.

You can expect it to feel as low as -5°C in some parts of Newcastle, with the high actual temperature reaching just 4°C at around 2pm on Wednesday afternoon.

The wind should ease tomorrow evening, but the temperature will drop once again overnight to 0°C but will feel sub-zero in more rural areas of the region.

Thursday looks set to bring more cloud to the city and there is a small chance of showers with the potential to be wintery. The icy conditions will continue, with the temperature set to struggle to get over 2°C.

The cold snap will continue through the evening and the extra clouds on Friday morning should see a slight rise in the temperature.

There shouldn’t be any showers throughout Friday, winter or otherwise, although it will still feel as cold as -2°C in the late afternoon into the night.

The weekend should see some slightly milder temperatures, with even the ‘feels like’ temperature creeping above 0°C on Saturday afternoon.

Heavy cloud and little sunshine on Sunday could see temperatures rise to as high as 6°C during the afternoon.

These slightly milder temperatures should carry on into the new week and leave behind the cold snap in the first week of the new year.

What has the Met Office said for the week ahead?
