A Met Office weather warning for violent winds affecting Newcastle has been upgraded from yellow to amber.

The Met Office has also officially named the atmospheric disturbance responsible for the dramatic change in the weather as Storm Arwen.

The warning is valid from 3.00pm on Friday through to 9.00am on Saturday.

“Storm Arwen will bring high northerly winds southwards across Scotland during Friday afternoon and evening, the highest winds then becoming confined to northeast England early Saturday.

“Gusts of 65 to 75 mph are expected in coastal areas with gusts in excess of 75 mph in a few places.”
