New parking rules will be put in place temporarily in Whitley Bay, North Shields, Tynemouth and Wallsend throughout December as traffic increases for festive events.
North Tyneside Council has confirmed it will once again be adapting parking rules in its busiest towns to ease travel chaos and give a boost to local businesses for the festive period. It is hoped that new parking arrangements will bring more people into the town to spend money on their Christmas shopping.
Locals will know that on-street parking in North Shields, Wallsend and Whitley Bay town centres is already free on Sundays and this will be extended to include Saturdays too in December. In addition, free on-street parking on Front Street, Tynemouth, will be in place on Saturdays and Sundays.
North Tyneside’s Deputy Mayor Cllr Carl Johnson said: “We want people to be able to choose to support their local businesses this Christmas. By providing more free parking over this important period for our businesses, it will make it easier for people to shop locally in our borough.
“North Tyneside will be full of seasonal spirit this year with Christmas lights displays and festive events, and I’m really hoping our residents and visitors can support some of the fantastic local businesses by doing their Christmas shopping here.”
