A terrified woman lost two front teeth when her ex-boyfriend burst through her living room window and punched her in the face.

The victim had enjoyed an evening with friends at her home when she received a text from former partner Neil Stavers, asking if another man was there.

Newcastle Crown Court heard when he got no response to the message, Stavers smashed his way into the house and attacked.

The victim said the loss of her two teeth has shattered her confidence and she now needs dentures.

Prosecutor Neil Jones told the court: "All of a sudden the blinds in her living room came falling down and Mr Stavers came flying through the window.

"Mr Stavers punched her once to the face, causing her front two teeth to fall out. She felt pain. Her mouth started to bleed."

The court heard the smashed window was boarded up by the council and the woman's blinds, that cost £400 were damaged and had to be replaced.

In an impact statement, the woman said: "I don't feel safe living in my home address, I know he will just turn up.

"I'm absolutely devastated about losing my teeth. I've lost full confidence about the way I look. I've lost my own teeth and now need dentures."

Stavers, 53, of Uxbridge Terrace, Felling, Gateshead, admitted assault and criminal damage.

Mr Recorder Anthony Hawks sentenced him to 20 months behind bars.

The recorder told him: "She was in her own home in the middle of the night, where she's entitled to feel safe from any interference from you.

"You burst into her home by coming through a window. You told the probation service because you were a joiner you found it easy to gain access through the window.

"You burst through the window, causing £400 damage to some blinds then you punched her in the face, knocking out two front teeth.

"I am happy to accept there may be two sides to things but that woman was, in my judgement, a vulnerable person in her own home and entitled to feel safe there and she ended up with two front teeth being knocked out by you."

Christopher Knox, defending, said Stavers is a joiner by trade and has a good work record.

Mr Knox added: "He accepts he lost his temper."
