Pep Guardiola has said his Manchester City side will ‘rise’ after Wednesday’s Champions League loss to Real Madrid, with Newcastle United next in line for the Sky Blues.

City suffered an incredible European exit at the Bernabeu, losing 3-1 to Real Madrid on the night and 6-5 on aggregate.

However, it was a game the English champions largely dominated, and heading into the 90th minute they were yet to face a shot on target.

But two late goals from Rodrygo forced extra-time and from there it was Real who took control of the game, with Karim Benzema netting the only goal of the additional 30 minutes and ensuring Los Blancos progressed to the final.

After such a disappointing loss, Guardiola will be hoping to immediately bounce back in the Premier League and when the team are next in action.

City still have plenty to play for on the domestic front, and need to hold off a relentless Liverpool in the title race, with the latter a point behind in second place.

A win against an in-form Newcastle side would provide the perfect response, and Guardiola warned the Magpies that his side ‘will have to’ respond after the devastating loss in Spain.

“We need time now, we need one or two days,” the City manager said in his post-match press conference. “But we will rise, we will come up. We have to do it with our people.

“Our players gave everything, they were so close but in the end we could not do it [against Real],” he added. “There is a long history in sport of these kinds of situations, to arrive at the end with 10 or 15 minutes remaining you are absolutely dominated by the opponent. But that didn’t happen.”

City host Newcastle this Sunday at the Etihad, with the game kicking off at 4:30pm.
