Newcastle United defender Kelland Watts has undergone surgery on his knee after sustaining the injury whilst in Austria.

The 22-year-old began pre-season on a high as he was the only player to complete 90 minutes during the opener against National League side Gateshead.

Watts was included in Eddie Howe’s 30-man squad for Austria but did not feature in matches against 1860 Munich and Mainz 05.

Supporters had questioned his whereabouts and it’s now been confirmed by Watts that he has gone under the knife on a knee injury.

Sharing an update via Instagram, Watts said: “Was absolutely gutted to start pre-season getting injured out in Austria but the operation on my knee went well and back home smiling, ready to take each step on road back to playing!”

The centre-back spent last season on loan at League One champions Wigan Athletic and was expected to seal another temporary exit this summer.

That, however, is now in doubt with Watts, under contract until 2024, facing an extended spell on the sidelines.
