Eddie Howe provides verdict on Alexander Isak’s £58m price tag after Newcastle United move

Newcastle United paid a club-record fee of £58million to sign Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad.

And in an inflated transfer market, Eddie Howe believes the Magpies have bagged themselves a good deal.

The Sweden international officially joined United on Friday and could make his debut at Wolverhampton Wanderers this afternoon, subject to international clearance.

As often is the case with big-money transfers, there is a debate over whether or not the player is worth the price tag.

Howe was asked that exact question as he previewed today’s Premier League clash at Molineux.

The 44-year-old said: “I definitely have a responsibility to the price, or I feel that responsibility. You can sign a player at any cost but I don’t think that’s the way to act.

“It’s very difficult because transfer fees are… it’s an incredible market. I could never sit here and say it’s value for money just with the price.

“When you look at the market, I think it’s a good deal for us, otherwise I wouldn’t be pushing hard to try and do it.

“The transfer prices are out of any type of realism from when I was playing but you just have to adapt to the times. If you don’t, then you don’t improve.
