Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp insisted Newcastle United should have been awarded a first-half penalty at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Magpies looked to have strong claims for a spot-kick with just 12 minutes on the clock when Sean Longstaff looked to be pull in the area by Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes.

Longstaff had pounced on a loose ball after the hosts struggled to clear and replays showed the Portuguese international had a handful of the Magpies midfielder’s shirt.

The ball eventually made its way to Joe Willock, but he was unable to convert from around eight yards out and Redknapp believes that may have influenced the decision to not award a spot-kick.

“I think that’s a penalty,” he told Sky Sports.

“Pulls his shirt, grabs his arm, I think they’re really lucky to get away with that one.

“That would have been a really bad start to your Wolves career but they get away with it.

“It looks sustained to me, you see that second angle and it’s more damning.

“Maybe because this is such a good chance, they didn’t go to VAR (Sky Sports confirmed a VAR check had been made during commentary).

“He (Willock) should score there.”
