How to get the magic £6 metro and bus ticket ahead of Great North Run day

Great North Run participants and spectators can benefit from a magic £6 ticket that works for transport on the Metro and on bus services throughout Sunday.

Great Run organisers have worked with travel providers in the North East to create the special ticket which will help the public get around Tyneside when the iconic race returns to the region.

The Great North Run takes place this Sunday, September 11 with a record-breaking 60,000 runners set to take on the half-marathon starting in Newcastle and finishing on the coast of South Shields.

With road closures aplenty on race day - which you can read more about here - public transport is relied upon by runners and their friends and family.

A one-day-only ticket has been organised that grants members of the public unlimited travel on services across Tyneside, Durham and Northumberland. This can be bought now, to save a last-minute panic on the day, although will also be available for purchase on Sunday.

Great Run organisers explained: "Nexus, Stagecoach, Arriva and Go North East have teamed up together to offer a simple multi-use travel ticket for £6, which will be valid on Metro, any bus service, and the Shields Ferry for the day of the Great North Run.

"This multi-use ticket includes travel across the entire North East network on the day of the run, including Tyne and Wear, Durham and Northumberland. This all-day travel ticket will be available to purchase from Metro station ticket machines, as well as on the day of the event."

Runners can best access the start line in Newcastle via Haymarket Metro and bus station, as well as Eldon Square bus station - more info on getting to the start line is here.

At the finish line, the easiest way to return to the city is on the Metro, although there will be long queues. Alternative methods of travel are also available.
