Newcastle United and Liverpool coaches ‘charged’ after controversial Anfield clash

The Football Association have confirmed they have taken action against coaches from Newcastle United and Liverpool following last week’s Premier League game at Anfield.

Staff from both clubs came face-to-face in the aftermath of the dramatic injury-time goal that ensured Jurgen Klopp’s side claimed a controversial win over the Magpies.

New signing Alexander Isak had put United ahead eight minutes before half-time but the Reds got back on level-terms with an equaliser from Roberto Firmino.

Five minutes of second-half injury-time were signalled but Liverpool youngster Fabio Carvalho netted the decisive goal with 98 minutes on the clock.

A number of coaches and players from both sides were involved in a coming together before play restarted and two members of staff have now been identified by the FA.

United’s Head of Performance Dan Hodges and Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg have been charged and have until Thursday to ‘provide their respective responses’.

A statement released on Tuesday afternoon confirmed coaches from both clubs had been charged with ‘breaching FA rule E3’.

It read: “Coaches from Liverpool FC and Newcastle United FC have been charged with breaching FA Cup E3 during their Premier League fixtures on Wednesday 31 August 2022.

“It is alleged that the behaviour of John Achterberg and Daniel Hodges in the 98th minute  of that game was improper, and that the Liverpool coach also used abusive and/or insulting gestures.”

“John Achterberg and Daniel Hodges both have until Thursday 8th September 2022 to provide their respective responses.”
