Former Newcastle United defender Gary Caldwell has been announced as Exeter City’s new manager. The 40-year-old has signed a long-term contract with the League One club.

Caldwell, who came through the Magpies’ academy set-up between 1997 and 2001, briefly returned to St James’ Park last year as interim under-23s lead coach following Chris Hogg’s departure to MK Dons. Caldwell was in the role for just three weeks. He then joined Manchester City as a loans coach before becoming assistant to Sean Maloney at Hibernian.

Exeter is Caldwell’s first management job in three years after leaving Partick Thistle. Caldwell has also managed Chesterfield and Wigan Athletic, where he guided the Latics to League One promotion in 2015/16.

In a joint statement, Nick Hawker, chair of Exeter City Supporters’ Trust, and Julian Tagg, club president, said: “As a supporter-owned club, Exeter City is unique and it was vitally important that we chose the right person to continue our journey.

“The club is in a strong position, having been promoted to League One and made a great start to the campaign, which sees us in eighth position in the table. Gary brings a great deal of experience to our club and we’re excited and optimistic for the future.”

“We would also like to put on record our thanks to interim manager Kevin Nicholson and Jon Hill for stepping in to manage the team over the last couple of weeks.”
