Newcastle United star Kieran Trippier discussed the extent of the hamstring injury he suffered during the Magpies impressive win at Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

The England defender looked in some trouble as he stretched in an attempt to prevent Saints star Mohamed Elyounoussi getting his side back on level-terms during the latter stages of the first-half at St Marys. The Norway international inexplicably sent his effort off-target from point-blank range to ensure United took a slim lead into half-time.

With England manager Gareth Southgate watching on from the stands just two weeks before the World Cup Finals get underway, Trippier underwent treatment on his hamstring but the former Atletico Madrid star reappeared for the second-half and set up Joe Willock to scored United’s third goal of their 4-1 win.

Trippier was by Javi Manquillo as the game made its win into its final 10 minutes and was quick to reassure supporters the treatment was only a precautionary measure after the game. The Magpies full-back said: "I felt it tighten up as I stretched but I came out in the second half to carry on. I'm OK."

Trippier may now be rested during Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Crystal Palace as United play their penultimate fixture before the World Cup Finals break.
