Sven Botman & Bruno Guimaraes respond as Kieran Trippier makes big announcement

Kieran Trippier’s spot in England’s 26-man World Cup squad was confirmed by Gareth Southgate today - and the Newcastle United right-back has reacted to the news. The 32-year-old links up the Three Lions for a third successive major tournament after successes at the 2018 World Cup and 2022 European Championships.

Given Trippier is one of Southgate’s most trusted players, a call-up was always likely. However, it was made a certainty following injuries to the likes of Reece James and Ben Chilwell in recent weeks. But all in all, he’s also been one of the Premier League’s most in-form players, ranking among the best in terms of creativity.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man has helped transform Newcastle since joining from Atletico Madrid in January. A foot injury restricted his playing time last season but he’s returned stronger than ever, starting every league game with United currently sitting third in the table.

But it’s not just his performances on the pitch, Trippier is a huge leader behind the scenes, and his popularity in the dressing room was clear to see when he reacted to being named in Southgate’s World Cup squad.

Trippier posted on Instagram: “Delighted to be called up to represent @england at this years World Cup! It’s always an honour to be involved with the squad and I can’t wait to meet up with the boys, let’s do everyone proud!”

Several of his Newcastle teammates have been quick to respond. Sven Botman said “fully deserved bro”, while Bruno Guimaraes also replied “deserved bro”. Joe Willock, Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy also sent their congratulations.

Trippier was one of three Magpies players to make the final cut. As expected, Nick Pope was selected, with Callum Wilson as the surprise package, if you like. Wilson made no secret of his desire to make the World Cup squad and has been rewarded for his six goals in the opening 10 games.

“Absolute honour to be called up to represent my country for a World Cup,” Wilson said. “Something I’ve dreamed about since a little boy and will cherish every moment of!

“In 2017 whilst recovering from my second ACL injury in Qatar, having never represented my country at this point. I said to myself before I left... ‘I will be back to play in the 2022 World Cup’ Dedication and hard work shows how you can achieve anything!

“Can’t wait to meet up with the lads and work even harder together now to achieve greatness.”
