Newcastle City Council has confirmed that it is 'in contact' with Newcastle United to organise a celebration in the city, should the Magpies manage to win the Carabao Cup at Wembley Stadium later this month.

If Eddie Howe's side manages to overcome Erik ten Hag's in-form Manchester United in London on February 26 it will be the first major trophy the club has won since triumphing in the FA Cup in 1955.

Whilst many fans will be too nervous about the prospect to risk jinxing black-and-white success, the council has said that they are prepared to celebrate a Carabao Cup win if it were to happen.

A Newcastle City Council spokesperson said: “Like many in the city, we can’t wait to support Newcastle United in the League Cup final later this month, and are looking forward to cheering them on at Wembley.

“We are in contact with the club regarding a potential post-final event and will announce any relevant details alongside the club in due course.”

Whatever that may look like is still under wraps with focus from the club and all involved still firmly on the pitch.

Speaking after defeating Southampton in the second leg of the semi-final last week, Howe said: "It’s been a brilliant ride to this point and we are really pleased to be in the final.

"Now we want to go one step further and win the trophy. We want to create new history for ourselves. As humans, you think you want something, then you achieve what you wanted, which is getting to the final, then you go, 'I am not happy with that, we’ve got to win it'.

"That is a great thing and I want my players to feel the same way."
