Ex-Rangers and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton told Football Insider: “I think he could. I have always liked Kieran Tierney as a footballer. It is hard for me to say but when he was at Celtic he was outstanding. For Scotland as well.

“I knew it was going to be a big jump going down to the Premier League but I knew he was ready for it. Unfortunately, they have brought in Zinchenko who has been outstanding.

“But I think somewhere like Newcastle, where he would be loved, they would love the way he plays, I think that would suit. For me, I think he is a better player overall than their current options.“

The striker was the subject of major interest from Newcastle during the final few days of last season’s January transfer window and enquiries were once again made last summer.

The Magpies had agreed a deal with the Reims man in January 2021 but the star pulled out, reportedly citing United’s battle against relegation to justify his decision.

Ekitike joined PSG on loan last summer but has struggled for game time against the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

That has led to speculation Ekitike could be allowed to depart on loan next season, with journalist Giovanni Castaldi suggesting the PSG hierarchy was unhappy with his performances and behaviour.

Meanwhile, FootMercato’s Santi Aouna has stated the Ligue 1 club does not want to allow the talisman to head out on loan and no talks have been held over such a decision.

There are also reports in France suggesting Ekitike is set to have further competition for a place in the PSG lineup with France internationals Randal Kolo Muani and Marcus Thuram both linked with a move to Paris.
