Simon Jordan believes Newcastle United will retain the services of midfielder Bruno Guimaraes - because there is no reason why the Brazil international would want to leave Tyneside.

The former Lyon star has become a popular figure since he completed a £40m to St James Park last January. Guimaraes made a handful of substitute appearances before marking his full debut with a spectacular goal in a crucial win at Southampton and set the tone for the remainder of the season as he played a lead role in leading Eddie Howe’s side away from the relegation zone and into mid-table.

The 25-year-old has continued to be integral for the Magpies as they push for a return to European competition after a decade-long absence and there has been talk he will put pen-to-paper on an improved contract amid speculation linking him with a move to Chelsea and Real Madrid.

But former Crystal Palace chairman Jordan has insisted the current setup at St James Park and the positivity around the club will only aid United as they look to tie down the 10-times capped Brazil midfielder.

Speaking on talkSPORT after being asked if United could see off interest in one of their key players, he said: “If you’ve got a proposition like Newcastle and you’re prepared to pay players what Newcastle might have to pay players to be the best in the business, then why wouldn’t you choose them?”

“This is a football club that’s alive right now. It’s absolutely alive, it’s the absolute bedrock of football. It’s what football should look like, a fanbase entirely in line with its ownership, entirely in line with its team, a group of players that absolutely want to play for that football club and a region that’s alive.”

Guimaraes will hope to help United return to winning ways when they entertain Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon.
