‘It has to be’: Newcastle United man responds to question everyone is asking ahead of Man Utd clash

Callum Wilson has labelled this weekend's meeting between Newcastle United and Manchester United as a Magpies chance for revenge.

It's the first time the two sides have met since last month's Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium. The Red Devils emerged triumphant in that match with a 2-0 win to lift the trophy that ended Newcastle hopes for a first major trophy since 1955.

Five weeks on and those cup-final wounds are starting to heal for the North East side but Wilson admitted revenge will be on the mind of his side come Sunday.

Speaking on the BBC Sounds' Footballer's Football Podcast, Wilson was asked by host Rickie Haywood-Williams if Eddie Howe and the team would treat this weekend's Premier League meeting as a chance for revenge.

Wilson said: "It has to be. We lost in the cup final to them and we're competing for a top-four place against them. It can't be two defeats and let the league form start hampering because of the cup defeat.

"We have to right the wrong and try and come out victorious. Especially at St James' Park, fans are going to be buzzing. It makes for a good game."

The race for Europe in the top flight is on and with Newcastle sitting fifth with two games in hand on fourth-placed Spurs, a place in the Champions League is in sight.

When speaking on the podcast, Wilson also broached the topic of Antonio Conte's sacking and what it might do for the London club.

He said: "It could go both ways. They could wait until the end of the season to appoint a new manager which means the players are playing under temporary charge and have a lot more freedom than a set routine and philosophy. It's a difficult one to say.

"The next few weeks will determine if it's positive or negative. Tottenham are a top side regardless, their individual players have such quality they can hurt teams regardless of how they're feeling."
