It was announced that Monopoly Events Comic Con would be heading to Newcastle’s Utilita Arena in May 2023. This is the first time that the event will take place in the North East, and Newcastle’s comic book fans have shared their excitement at the news on Facebook. One comic fan wrote: “Monopoly Events run such good comic cons so we are definitely in for a treat. I, for one, can’t wait to not have to travel miles to attend a decent comic con.”
However, some Newcastle residents were a bit confused as to what a Comic Con would entail, so we have picked out the most common questions and answered them!
What is a Comic Con?
A Comic Con is an event (the ‘con’ is short for convention) where comic book fans can get together to celebrate the culture of comic books. The event is usually held over two or more days, and is known to be packed with fun and interesting things for comic fans.
What will happen?
At a Comic Con, fans usually dress up as their favourite comic book characters. This is known as cosplay (short for costume play). At the event, comic fans are given the opportunity to socialise with one another, and meet a variety of special guests, including creators, experts and characters. There will also be workshops, activities, and more!
Who are the special guests at Comic Con North East?
The special guests for Comic Con North East are yet to be announced, however the names of those attending will be revealed before the event.
What are Monopoly Events?
Monopoly Events is the event company behind Comic Con North East. The company was set up by Andy Kleek, whose mission is to create fan-based events and community gatherings. Monopoly Events’ slogan is “by the fans for the fans”. You can check out their website here.

When is it?
Comic Con North East will be held over two days, May 27 and May 28 in 2023. It is an all-day event with doors opening from 9am.
Where else can comic fans visit in Newcastle?
There are other places for comic fans to visit, shop and socialise in Newcastle. Travelling Man is a shop and community hub that holds special events from time to time. Forbidden Planet is a comic shop, stocking a variety of cult classics. They both can be found on Grainger Street. Universal Export, which is located within the Grainger Market is a stall that stocks back issues of comics. Be More Geek, which can be found in Eldon Square is another shop, stocking various products from comic culture.
