Newcastle United: Eddie Howe set to raid Manchester United in January transfer window as spending spree set to commence

Eddie Howe is planning to raid some of Manchester United’s fringe players as he hopes to pull of a triple signing of Dean Henderson, Jesse Lingard and Donny Van De Beek as he looks to keep his Newcastle side in the Premier League.

This comes as all three players have struggled for game time at Old Trafford this season, and they all can revive their careers under Howe in Newcastle.

It’s been no secret of Van De Beek’s rocky time at United. From the star man in that glittering Ajax team, the Dutchman is more known for being a benchwarmer than a starter as he struggles to make his way into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team. With only 21 appearances for United since 2020 and turning 25 next year, it could be the perfect chance for Van De Beek to revive his career, in a team where he will definitely get minutes.

Henderson is also on Howe’s radar. The new Newcastle boss has a good track record when signing young, home-grown goalkeepers. When he was Bournemouth manager, Howe signed Aaron Ramsdale for just under £100,000 and he’s now pushing Jordan Pickford for the England number 1 jersey, and is playing a starring role at Arsenal.

Henderson had a stand-out season for Sheffield United in the 2019/2020 season and even replaced David De Gea for a brief time, before the Spaniard recaptured his form. Since then, Henderson has barely played and will be looking to be the main man whilst he still develops at such a young age.

And to round off the mini-united raid is Jesse Lingard. The attacking midfielder enjoyed a very successful loan spell at West Ham, and despite rumours were rife he’d move to East London permanently, Lingard decided to try and stay in Manchester and revive his career there, rather than trying elsewhere.

However, a lack of game time despite United performing poorly it seems as if Lingard’s story in Manchester may be coming to an end. He’s already in his prime years at 28 and can’t sit around wondering if things will change. Newcastle have been quoted at £10 million for the Englishman.

Newcastle do face stiff competition for Lingard, as Southampton and Barcelona are reportedly also interested. Barcelona, despite their dire financial situation are still one of the most attractive clubs in the world and it would be hard for Newcastle to persuade anyone to come to them over Barcelona.
