The 11-time England international is expected to become a free agent at the end of the season

Italian heavyweights AC Milan have joined Newcastle United in the race to sign 11-time England international Dominic Calvert-Lewin, according to reports.

The Everton striker faces an uncertain future as he approaches the final few months at Goodison Park and is no closer to agreeing a new deal despite beginning talks with Toffees chiefs in May.

"That decision comes from Dominic," former Everton captain Alan Stubbs told BBC Sport.

"Everton as a club will not want to lose him for nothing, but for me, it looks like his head is elsewhere.”

During the 2020/21 campaign, he scored 16 goals in 33 appearances and was described by Carlo Ancelotti as the type of player with the potential to be at the top in England and Europe for a very long time.

In recent years, injuries have hampered Calvert-Lewin’s progress, but his record of scoring seven in 33 games last season while playing the majority of matches this term suggests he is slowly overcoming those issues.

Sky Sports reported that Newcastle were heavily linked with Calvert-Lewin throughout the summer and claimed that Eddie Howe was a huge admirer of the forward due to his strength in the air, hold up play and his natural instincts to score goals inside the box.

However, the Magpies were ultimately fended off by Everton’s lucrative price tag of around £40m at the time.

TeamTalk now understands that Calvert-Lewin’s contract uncertainty has alerted Newcastle as they continue to seek to find a replacement for Callum Wilson, whose future at St James’ Park remains in doubt as he approaches the final few months of his contract.

Howe has not ruled out a future for Wilson as he pushes towards a return against West Ham. But his record of starting just two matches in 2024 has prompted the Magpies to begin looking for further reinforcements to compete with leading goalscorer Alexander Isak.

The outlet adds that AC Milan are also keen to sign a centre forward to push them up the table. The Rossoneri currently sit seventh in the league and have struggled to score goals on a regular basis this term.
