Eddie Howe visits his former club on Sunday (kick-off 2pm) in search of back-to-back wins after beating Southampton 1-0 in the campaign opener, despite playing over an hour with 10 men.
Fabian Schar was shown a red card in the 30th minute after he squared up to Ben Brereton Diaz after the Saints forward barged him to the ground when referee Craig Pawson had already whistled for a free-kick.
After touching foreheads, Brereton Diaz flung himself to the ground and Schar was sent off. Newcastle did appeal the decision but were unsuccessful, meaning the Switzerland international will sit out of the next three matches.
Emil Krafth is in line to replace Schar after coming on against Southampton. Howe may also consider former Cherries defender Lloyd Kelly, either at centre-half or left-back, after he impressed when introduced as a substitute for the final 20 minutes last weekend.
On the subject of former Bournemouth players, the fixture on the South Coast is likely to come too soon for Callum Wilson as he recovers from a back injury.
Meanwhile, Andoni Iraola’s side are hoping to claim their first three points of the term after drawing 1-1 away to Nottingham Forest in their opener. Last season’s meeting between the two clubs saw Bournemouth run out 2-0 winners on home turf before drawing 2-2 on Tyneside.
