Newcastle United’s first transfer window under their new owners was a busy one - with a total of five players arriving at St James’ Park.

The Magpies spent around £90million in January 2022 to bring Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Matt Targett and Dan Burn to St James’ Park.

Each player was bought initially to help United retain their Premier League status, which proved no such problem in the end as Eddie Howe guided the club to an 11th placed finish and 14 points above the relegation zone.

All players, excluding Wood, who was sold to Nottingham Forest in January, have taken Newcastle to new heights this term with Champions League qualification almost secured.

And one player who might have been part of that transformative pack is Monaco star Aleksandr Golovin, according to the Russian international’s agent Alexander Klyuev.

“There was serious interest from Newcastle at the very beginning of 2022,” Klyuev told Championat. “There was an offer. We were ready to discuss it if the clubs agreed. We understood that Newcastle, given the arrival of serious investors, is an interesting prospect.”

Golovin has also had offers from West Ham United and Everton but wants to join a club that competes in Europe. Newcastle will be doing that next season, having already guaranteed a top seven finish with five games remaining,

“At different times, West Ham and Everton were testing the ground,” Klyuev added. “But ‘Sasha’ wanted to join a club that plays in European competitions. There is a desire to play at the maximum level.”

Golovin, an attacking midfielder, has scored 24 goals and provided 33 assists since joining the Ligue 1 side from CSKA Moscow in 2018. The move followed on from an impressive World Cup campaign.
