Alan Shearer took aim at VAR after it took centre stage during Brentford v Newcastle United.

Alan Shearer has reacted angrily after Newcastle United’s first-half performance against Brentford. The Magpies trailed 1-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium, with VAR once again taking centre stage.

After ruling out Ivan Toney’s goal in the ninth minute for offside, VAR was involved in the closing stages after instructing referee Chris Kavanagh to have a second look at Alexander Isak’s challenge on Rico Henry inside the 18-yard box.

Kavanagh eventually awarded a penalty, which Toney converted, and Shearer was left raging at the amount of time it took to reach a decision.

He said: “Never ever clear and obvious. Another long wait. .....:”

Toney saw a 30th-minute penalty saved by Nick Pope, the first spot-kick the England striker has missed since 2018.

“Having said that it’s .... decision. #NUFC have been poor in that first half also.”
