Alan Shearer isn’t ruling out the possibility of Alexander Isak breaking his Premier League goalscoring record at Newcastle United.

And the Magpies legend joked that the Sweden international could follow in the footsteps of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland by signing a new nine-year contract.

Isak scored his 18th and 19th goals of the campaign in Saturday’s 3-1 win at Southampton, first equalising from the penalty spot before putting United ahead on the half-hour mark.

That saw the striker move above teammate Callum Wilson into second in the club’s all-time Premier League record goalscorer charts.

“Shall we talk about Isak? Why not! Another magnificent performance,” Shearer told Match of the Day.

“He’s got a really interesting [penalty] technique. He’s having a look at the goalkeeper just before he touches the ball and puts it into the corner of the net.

“His all-round game is magnificent. The give, the go and the understanding of the position that he’s in. He’s creating so many opportunities and getting shots away.

“The pass from [Jacob] Murphy is brilliant but the first touch... watch the way he puts the ball into his path so he doesn’t have to alter his run and the way he sticks it away, it is fantastic.”

Isak’s 19 goals in 25 games this campaign puts him on course to break Shearer’s 21st-century record of scoring 28 goals for the club in a single season. But the 25-year-old is still 100 behind Shearer’s 148 Premier League goals for Newcastle.

Erling Haaland nine-year deal... Alexander Isak next?

Isak is under contract at St James’ Park until 2028. Stay beyond that and the former Real Sociedad star might just surpass it.

Haaland recently penned a new nine-and-a-half-year contract at Man City, and Shearer joked Isak might do the same on Tyneside.

Shearer continued: “I think there is three world class forwards in the Premier League, [Erling] Haaland being one, [Mohamed] Salah being another and I think Isak has played himself in that company.

“My maths isn’t great but I think he’s 100 behind me. You never know, he might sign a nine-year deal!”
