Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer is looking forward to the summer transfer window.

Alan Shearer says Newcastle United face an interesting summer transfer window after qualifying for the Champions League.

Eddie Howe’s squad are enjoying a well-deserved rest after sealing an unexpected Premier League top four finish for the first time in 20 years. While Howe himself also has some downtime, preparations for next season are already underway with the transfer market top of everyone’s priority list.

Newcastle won’t lose sight of the success that has got them to this point. Rather than sign so-called superstars, the club has recruited English experience, as well as shop for players in the Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Sven Botman-type bracket.

Which players will Howe target? Shearer, like every other Geordie, is interested to find out as the Magpies legend reveals the next challenge is to end the 54-year trophy drought.

“Newcastle have had an unbelievable season.” Shearer told William Hill. “The job that Eddie Howe and his staff have done has just been incredible and they deserve it.

“They’ve played some great football, they’ve been tough, hard to beat, but they’ve been entertaining and they’ve got St James’ Park rocking again so long may that continue.”

“Next season will be a tough one but it will be interesting to see what happens in the summer in terms of who they are going to get rid of and bring in, and how much they are going to spend.

“What’s next for Newcastle is to go and win a trophy. They nearly did it this year, it was great to be back at Wembley but what happened [losing to Manchester United in the League Cup final] was obviously disappointing, so winning a trophy is what’s next because that’s what is missing.”
