Alan Shearer & Sunderland legend can’t believe Newcastle United were denied a penalty vs Man City

Both former strikers were in agreement that Newcastle United were wrongly denied a penalty against Manchester City.

Alan Shearer and Jermain Defoe believe Newcastle United should have been awarded a first half penalty against Manchester City.

The incident occurred just before half time when John Stones’ elbow connected with the top of Fabian Schar’s head.

It was checked by VAR but agreed with referee Jarred Gillett’s initial on-field decision. Shearer and Defore believe the officials made the wrong call .

“Yeah, that’s a penalty,” Sunderland legend Defoe admitted. If you watch John Stones’ reaction, he looks at the referee straight away. I think he panics.

“Anywhere else on the pitch and that’s a foul. It’s clumsy. The more you watch it back, the worse it gets.”

Shearer agreed: “Anywhere else on the pitch and the referee gives a foul there. They say there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn it. I thought it was a penalty as well.”

The Magpies were leading 2-1 at the time after Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson cancelled out Ilkay Gundogan’s opener.

Kieran Trippier made it 3-1 on 56 minutes via an unstoppable free-kick but City hit back through Erling Haaland and Bernando Silva.

The 3-3 draw saw both clubs maintain their unbeaten start to the 2022-23 Premier League season.
