Alan Shearer has backed Harry Kane to break his Premier League goal record - and joked he could even do it in a Newcastle United shirt.

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker took aim at fellow pundit Shearer on social media, claiming Kane was ‘coming for’ the former United man’s record. Shearer is currently 52 goals ahead of Kane in the Premier League’s all-time goalscoring charts.

And in response, Shearer, quick-witted as ever, responded: “But will he break it in a Newcastle shirt or a Man Utd shirt!!?”

Kane has been linked with a move away from Spurs this summer, with Erik ten Hag believed to be keen to add the striker to his Old Trafford revolution.

A move to Newcastle, in reality, however, would seem highly unlikely, especially given Kane’s age and wages.

Shearer was full of praise for United’s current No.9 after another double took Wilson to 15 for the campaign and further cemented the Magpies’ place in the top four.

Wilson netted two goals despite only coming on as a half time substitute at St James’ Park on Sunday - and he could have had four, had the VAR gods looked down on him favourably and his late drive crept in rather than hitting the Gallowgate End bar.

Shearer tweeted: Not one shot on target for the Toon in the first half. Down the hill in the second half and on comes @CallumWilson and changes it all. A brilliant performance from him.”
