Alan Shearer poked fun at Manchester United fans after his beloved Newcastle United claimed a rare victory at Old Trafford.

Newcastle had won just once at Old Trafford in the Premier League era but first-half goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton made that two.

Isak opened the scoring after just three minutes in when he headed home Lewis Hall’s cross. Joelinton then doubled the advantage when he attacked Anthony Gordon’s delivery.

Man United gained some control when Ruben Amorim hooked Joshua Zirkzee on the half-hour mark and introduced Kobbie Mainoo to help pack the midfield. But the hosts were unable to find a response and Newcastle saw out fifth straight win in all competitions.

Reacting to the result on X, Shearer said: “Start to finish the best team. Well done the TOON”.

In the minutes leading up to kick-off, the Old Trafford PA system played the song ‘Daydream Believer’ to which Man United supporters sang along with the words “cheer up Alan Shearer”. You know the rest of the lyrics…

And the Magpies legend couldn’t help but bite back, posting a laughing GIF and writing the words “Ok I’ll cheer up!!!”

Shearer famously turned down a move to the Red Devils in favour of joining Newcastle in 1996. Although he didn’t lift a trophy with his boyhood club, the Premier League all-time’s record goalscorer doesn’t regret a thing.

"I am more than happy with my decision,” Shearer said on the Rest is Football podcast last year. “If I had the same decision to make again, I would do exactly the same thing. I loved my 10 years at Newcastle, despite us not winning anything. I wouldn't change anything.”
