Isak, capped 37 times by Sweden, will undergo medical tests and complete the relevant paperwork ahead of making his club record switch official.

The Magpies agreed a transfer fee with the La Liga club in the build-up to last night’s second round Carabao Cup win against Tranmere Rovers.

Sporting director Dan Ashworth and chief scout and head of recruitment Steve Nickson were in the Basque Country to thrash out negotiations.

When asked about Isak after the 2-1 victory, Eddie Howe remained tight-lipped.

Previously, a deal for Isak looked out of reach due to the figures involved,, however United have reached a compromise with Sociedad.

The fee will smash the previous transfer record. That was Joelinton’s £40million arrival from Hoffenheim in 2019.
