Newcastle United are set to welcome back Alexander Isak for the visit of Brighton & Hove Albion but Callum Wilson may miss out.

Isak has missed the last three matches with a broken toe while Wilson is yet to feature this season due to a back and hamstring issue.

Both strikers have trained this week but Magpies’ head coach Eddie Howe admits Wilson might need a little more time.

Howe said: “Alex has trained and trained well. He trained the start of this week and looks good. At this moment in time he will be in contention.

“Callum has also trained but with Callum we'll continue to assess him day-by-day, we’ve got to try and make the right decision.

“Possibly. As I say, it’s a day-by-day thing and we’re obviously in communication with him. The big thing with Callum is when we get him back we want to try and keep him back for as long as possible so we’ve got to make the right call.”

The Magpies, however, will be without Kieran Trippier, who withdrew in the closing stages against Everton last time out. Howe has confirmed the former England international is likely to miss a few weeks with a hamstring injury.

“Kieran will miss out. He’s picked up a hamstring problem. We don’t necessarily think it is too serious but probably enough to keep him for a few weeks.”
