Alexander Isak, Joelinton & Kieran Trippier: Newcastle United injury list & return dates

Alexander Isak, Joelinton & Kieran Trippier: Newcastle United’s full injury list & estimated return dates.

Newcastle United avoided a Carabao Cup hangover by beating Brentford 2-1 at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.

Alexander Isak opened the scoring for the Magpies on the brink of half-time before Bryan Mbeumo levelled from the penalty spot. Sandro Tonali then scored the winner when his cross-turned-shot caught goalkeeper Mark Flekken out at his near post.

Eddie Howe’s side next travelled to Leicester City on Monday night and as it stands have some fresh injury concerns heading into the game...

Alexander Isak

Alexander Isak scored his 24th goal of the campaign to open the scoring against Brentford but later withdrew in the 66th minute.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Speaking after the game Howe revealed: “He] just wasn't feeling 100% in his groin, I don't think. And was just, yeah, a little bit unsure in his movements. So that's why we withdrew him.”

Estimated return date

Leicester City (A) 07/04.

Kieran Trippier

Kieran Trippier was taken off in the 89th minute against Brentford and appeared to be limping.

“He was just feeling, he said it was like a cramp sensation in his groin,” Howe said after the game. “So we hope it's nothing serious.

“That is the negative today. We've got a few niggles. We hope they're nothing serious. We have such a small squad as you've seen from our bench today so we can't afford to pick up any injuries.”

Estimated return date

Leicester City (A) 07/04.

Joelinton

Joelinton’s right was heavily strapped against Brentford and there was one moment in the second half where the Brazilian required on-field treatment.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Howe said after the game: “I think his knee was causing him a little bit of discomfort today. The knee that he'd suffered before so I don't think he was 100% fit.

“But it would have taken a lot for Joe to come off the pitch today. So that's where we need to assess every little niggle that we have and make sure that everyone's OK for Monday.”

Estimated return date

Leicester City (A) 07/04.

Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon was called up by England for their World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia last month. The 24-year-old came on as a substitute in the first game but an injury forced him to withdraw from the squad and miss the second game.

Gordon was sent off during his last appearance for Newcastle - the 2-1 FA Cup fifth round defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion - and has now served his three-match suspension.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

“Anthony has a really nasty bruise in and around his thigh, straight groin area,” Howe said on Tuesday. “He's up and running, feeling quite good. He hasn't trained with the group yet, so we anticipate he'll do that within the next few days, hopefully.”

Estimated return date

Leicester City (A) 07/04.

Sven Botman

Botman last featured for the Magpies in their 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg win over Arsenal two months ago. An initial assessment determined the problem to be minor before four weeks later - after he missed matches against Birmingham City, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion - it was confirmed the Dutchman required surgery.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

“Sven's not too bad,” said Howe on Tuesday. “He's had an operation, a very minor operation, just to clean out a bit of floating bone that was in his knee that was causing him the problem.

“I think the initial diagnosis was between six to eight weeks, but I think he's already got through two or three of those. So he's on the road. He's feeling good. Fingers crossed we'll see him probably in May sometime.”

Estimated return date

Brighton & Hove Albion (A) 04/05

Jamaal Lascelles

It’s now over a year since Jamaal Lascelles featured for Newcastle because of an ACL injury. He is back in light training but there are doubts over whether he’ll play for the end of the campaign.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

“I don't know whether we'll see Jamaal before the end of the season,” Howe said on Tuesday. I don't really want to set a target on his time to return. I think he has started very light training with the squad, but that would be light, not necessarily in competitive drills, but on the drills that are non-competitive he has joined in and he's looked really good. Small steps for him.

“We're hoping that he can definitely be joining in and competing in training before the end of the season. Whether that ties in with the team or whether he gets there in time, let's wait and see for competitive action. But he's a big player.”

Estimated return date

2025-26 season

Lewis Hall

Lewis Hall will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season after undergoing surgery on his foot.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

"I'm devastated for him actually because he had so much to look forward to at this moment of the season with the cup final - which will be a big thing for all the players at the moment,” Howe said recently.

"Also the international experience coming up, and he was just in really good form as well and playing very well, so yeah, that's a big blow for him and for us. The most important thing now is his recovery and making sure he comes back as good as he can."

Estimated return date

2025-26 season
