Defeated and depleted. That’s perhaps the best two words to describe Newcastle United’s 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Felix Nmecha’s 45th minute winner for the visitors, blowing Group F wide open, was only half the story.
Within the opening quarter of an hour, United lost Alexander Isak to a recurring thigh problem. And that injury list was immediately added to by Jacob Murphy, who withdrew with a suspected dislocated shoulder in the second half.
Magpies’ head coach Eddie Howe also confirmed after Dortmund that Elliot Anderson will be sidelined for a few weeks because of a back problem. Sven Botman and Lewis Miley remain unavailable for United while Harvey Barnes is sidelined until early 2024.

1. Sandro Tonali - August 2024
Tonali has been handed a 10 month ban from football following an investigation into illegal betting activity by the Italian Football Federation.
2. Alexander Isak - Chelsea (H) - 25/11
The Swede was forced off just 14 minutes in v Dortmund after suffering a recurrence of his groin problem. Isak has undergone a scan and won’t return before the November international break at the earliest.
3. Jacob Murphy - February 2024
Murphy is set to undergo shoulder surgery which will likely see him sidelined for three months.
4. Sven Botman - N/A
Botman has missed the last eight matches with a knee issue. Currently, the Dutchman has no return date as Newcastle await further clarity on his injury.
