Newcastle United have released several academy stars following the 2023-24 campaign

Matty Bondswell has thanked Newcastle United for “many great memories” following his release.

The 22-year-old’s contract has not been renewed and he will officially leave the Magpies next month. Bondswell arrived in 2021 from RB Leipzig with a promising reputation, having represented England at youth level.

Much of his time as a Newcastle player was spent out on loan - with the most recent spell at Newport County in League Two. But Bondswell failed to make a significant impression to keep his place on Tyneside.

Fans may remember his impressive performance against Benfica in a pre-season friendly two years ago. That led many to predict a first-team future was in the offing but, unfortunately for him, the opportunity never came.

He becomes the latest youngster to be released following news that Michael Ndiweni and Amadou Diallo will also be let go. Academy development - an area neglected by the previous regime - has been a key priority for Newcastle since the takeover.

Producing players or flipping them for a profit can alleviate FFP/PSR pressures - a tactic adopted by Manchester City and Chelsea. Posting on social media, Bondswell confirmed his exit after three years at the club.

“My time at Newcastle has come to an end,” he wrote. “I’ll be leaving with many great memories and I want to thank everyone who has been a part of that.

“Fans, thank you to the fans for your support. It’s been an honour to be able to wear the black and white shirt in front of you.”
