Ange Postecoglou believes Tottenham Hotspur lacked “bravery” in their humiliating 4-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

Spurs failed to eradicate the pain of last year’s 6-1 drubbing, with the Magpies adding salt to their wounds at St James’ Park. A brace from Alexander Isak, with Anthony Gordon and Fabian Schar also bagging, put Tottenham to the sword in brutal fashion.

Postecoglou’s side have been media darlings for much of the campaign due to their improved playing style. The 58-year-old lifted a dark cloud left by the likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte in North London.

However, there was little his Spurs side could do on Tyneside - despite having 73 per cent possession - to gain further ground in the Champions League race. Speaking post-match, Postecoglou hailed Newcastle - while warning Tottenham fans that more heavy defeats are on their way.

“Newcastle were good, credit to them”, Postecoglou said afterwards. “We just didn’t really get a grip of the game at all. We never really wrestled control at any stage and we paid the price for that.

“We allowed them to dictate the way the game was played. We weren’t brave on the ball. A lot of it was self-inflicted.

“It’s the same as every other game. There’s no point sitting around feeling sorry for yourself. We’ve got another game in two weeks’ time. It’s not the first time it (a heavy defeat) has happened to us - it won’t be the last.

“It’s part of our growth. Sometimes that growth is painful. I was concerned with all of it. There was no one area that cost us today. We never got to any sort of tempo.”
