Anthony Gordon is set to be involved in Newcastle United’s pre-season friendly against Girona tonight (kick-off 7:30pm).

The 23-year-old was handed extra time off after being part of the England squad that reached the Euro 2024 final. He only reported back to Newcastle on Monday.

Former Magpies’ co-owner Amanda Staveley revealed last month she feared the club would have to sell Gordon in order to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). That was before United solve their critical situation at the 11th hour through the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to Brighton & Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest, respectively, for a combined £68million.

It has been suggested that the exit talk had unnerved Gordon, particularly with it being his boyhood club, but United boss Eddie Howe said on Thursday: “His head is exactly where Bruno’s is, it’s Newcastle. The first few days he has been exceptional, focused on his work, fitness - everything to do with this football club, nothing else, no distractions. He’s been really impressive.”

And tonight, Gordon is in line to make his first appearance since scoring in the 4-2 defeat at Manchester United in May. The winger has been pictured arriving at St James’ Park as Newcastle take on La Liga side Girona.

Howe’s men end their preparations for the new Premier League campaign with a double header at St James’ Park. French side Stade Brestois visit on Saturday before the season officially kicks off against Southampton a week later.
