Anthony Gordon, Sven Botman & Dan Burn: Newcastle United injury list & expected return dates

Newcastle United have some fresh injury concerns heading into Saturday’s Premier League clash against Manchester City.

The Magpies advanced into the Carabao Cup final with a 4-0 aggregate win over Arsenal last Wednesday before a few days later beating League One leaders Birmingham City 3-2 to progress into the fifth round of the FA Cup.

But those two victories may have come at a cost. Here, we take a look at Newcastle’s injury list and when each player is expected to return:

Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon missed Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round win at Birmingham City with a quad injury.

What has Eddie Howe said?

“Yes, I know we hope so,” said Howe when asked if Gordon would be back for Man City. “We've treated the cups the same for the past few years. Everyone that's fit will take. So he's not here today, which means he's obviously got a problem.”

Expected return date

Manchester City (A) 15/03

Sven Botman

Sven Botman was withdrawn with a knee issue in Newcastle’s 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final second leg win over Arsenal, forcing him to miss the trip to Birmingham three days later.

Speaking before the Birmingham game, Howe said: "I don't think he'll be available for this weekend. He has taken a knock to his knee [the opposite one to his ACL injury].

"We don’t believe it is a serious injury but it'll be enough to keep him out of the Birmingham game and we'll then assess him during the week before our next league game."

After the cup tie finished, Howe said: “I don't know at this moment in time.”

Expected return date

Manchester City (A) 15/03

Dan Burn

Dan Burn started the FA Cup fourth round win at Birmingham City but needed to come off in the 55th minute because of a groin issue.

Providing an update after the game, Howe said: “I don't know at this moment in time. Of course, we'd love him to be, but we don't know how serious Dan's injury is at the moment.

“I was a reluctant starter of Dan tonight. I didn't want to take that risk with any of our players. But we played against Wednesday because we knew the physical cost of that game, but numbers dictated we had to.”

Joelinton

Joelinton sustained a knee issue in the recent defeat to Fulham, forcing him to miss the last two matches against Arsenal and Birmingham.

What has Eddie Howe said?

Howe said: “I think he'll be out for weeks, not months. I don't think it's a serious injury, but it will be enough to make him miss the next few league games, I think.”

Expected return date

West Ham United (A), 10/03

Harvey Barnes

Harvey Barnes withdrew with a muscle injury in the 3-1 win over Bromley on January 12 and hasn’t played since.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Speaking on January 31, Howe said: “Harvey is a little behind; he is maybe two to three weeks away.”

Expected return date

Nottingham Forest (H), 23/021

Jamaal Lascelles

Club captain Jamaal Lascelles has been on the sidelines for 11 months recovering from an ACL injury.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

"He is still working his way back,” Howe said last month. “He is a little bit delayed from Sven's time. Every player is different, and every player responds differently to the operation. The stresses that you need to go through.

"He is making good progress and he has been the absolute model professional in terms of what he is being asked to do and how he is conducting himself.

"Without putting a definitive timeline on it, he is going to be a couple of months away."
