Diego Carlos is set to miss the majority of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign after rupturing his Achilles’ tendon during Aston Villa’s 2-1 win over Everton on Saturday.

The Brazilian central defender only joined Villa in June in a transfer worth £26million from La Liga outfit Sevilla.

He almost moved to England in January when Newcastle United had two bids rejected for the 29-year-old before Steven Gerrard’s side acted quickest this summer.

By then, the Magpies had successfully turned their attention back to signing top defensive target Sven Botman from Lille.

Carlos was starting just his second competitive game for Villa against Everton before needing to be replaced by Calum Chambers in injury time.

And it’s been revealed by the Villa that Carlos has ruptured his Achilles’ tendon, which will require surgery.

A statement read: “Aston Villa can confirm Diego Carlos has ruptured his Achilles’ tendon.

“The player sustained the injury during Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Everton. The player will require surgery and will then begin his rehabilitation programme.”

And according to Sky Sports, Carlos’ injury is likely to see him sidelined for at least six months.
